Theodora (1979-80)
Ballet suite for chamber group of six players. Instrumentation is for flute, (alto flute), oboe, (english horn), trumpet, piano, percussion (two), including guitar. The eleven movements are Processional, Dance of the Animals (Acacius' Dance, Lion's Dance, Peacock's Dance, Bear's Dance, Monkey's Dance, Leopard's Dance), Theordora's Dance, Justinian's Dance, Justinian and Theordora's Pas de deux, Fanfare and Recessional. An arrangement for piano four hands is also available. This ballet has had two different productions. Performance time is approximately 35 minutes.
 

Seven Bagatelles (1981) Piano
Short pieces ranging in difficulty from adv. beginner to intermediate. These pieces include a waltz, a solfeggietto, and a lyrical song and utilize a range of twentieth century techniques in an appealing context, including a tone row and tone clusters. Playing time about 12 1/2 min.


Duo (1982) Violin and viola
Andante, Allegro molto, Lento, Allegretto. A contrapuntal and lyrical work. Playing time: 15'26".


Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird (1980-81) Thirteen songs for flute, oboe and tenor voice (or viola or cello)
Performance time about 25 minutes. These songs to Wallace Stevens' poems of the same name reflect the images of the poetry. The stanzas are recited before each song rather than sung to the music.
 

Prelude and Toccata (1982-83) Piano
A highly pianistic and bravura work. The Prelude is a dramatic piece in octaves and passage work. The Toccata is built out of a rapid figure that undergoes subtle transformations. Playing time about 8 minutes.


Adagio (1983-84) Oboe solo, with flute, clarinet, and strings
Also arranged for oboe, flute, clarinet, and piano. A lyrical, chromatic work in a neo-romantic idiom. Playing time about 10 minutes.


Wedding Piece (1984) Violin and cello or double bass
This is a lyrical Andante in the character of a passacaglia. Playing time about 4 minutes.


Introduction and Dance (1984-1985) Cello and piano
Andante and Allegro. A declamatory introduction is followed by an irregularly rhythmic contrapuntal section. Playing time about 4 minutes.
 

Toccata (1985) Harpsichord
A display piece with an oddly rhythmic pattern using crossing hands. Exhibits the resources of the instrument without being excessively difficult. Playing time about 4 minutes.
 

Two Movements (1982, 1992) Unaccompanied cello
Adagio and Allegretto. Playing time about 6 minutes.
 

Postlude: Homage to John Dunstable (1999) Organ
A free, dramatic work. Playing time approx. 2 minutes.
 
 
SONGS

The Fiddler of Dooney (1988). Poem by William Butler Yeats. For baritone (in a); for soprano (in d). Moderato. In the style of a folk song. Also arranged for unaccompanied four-part chorus.
 

That Brave Man (1995). Poem by Wallace Stevens. For soprano voice. Adagio.
 

Love's Ways: Three Songs to Poems by Philip Booth. For soprano voice.
     First Song (1997) Andante. In the manner of a folk song.
     Chances (1996) Slowly.
     The Dancer (1997) Moderato.
 

I Meant To Do My Work Today (1996). Poem by Eva LeGallienne. A two-part song for children's voices.
